| On March 26 the Geography and Geology Department had the pleasure of Dr. Harm Deblij speaking to us about what are the four most important things to get out of a World Regions course when taken today.
The four things are:
1. Environmental change
2. The ending of the Cold War and the future with China
3. The Global rise of Islam
4. Helping Africa
On point 1 he said he wants us to think about what it is we are learning in our classes. Is global warming real? He recited that in 1968 scientists thought we were entering another glacial age. "Don't you believe it!" Many, he said, believe the changes are within the parameters of normal change.
He also gave an interesting varient in thinking through human history, by stating that but for the Black Plague we might all be speaking Chinese instead of Indo-European languages.
Islam is growing proportionately in the world, and perhaps we had better study rather than vilify it to understand why many Muslims are so anti-western.
And helping Africa is certainly something that perhaps our nation should consider while celebrating a healthy economy. With over 24 million AIDs cases should we be giving ourselves a tax-break or helping to change the the African AIDs epidemic? Is it really NOT our problem?
Certainly worthy questions to think about.
