GIS at EMU

At the beginning of the Fall 2002 academic year the department was awarded an REF grant to teach GIS skills to multiple disciplines. Eleven disciplines were represented in the workshop. Among those who participated was Prof. Randal Baier who immediately took advantage of this new tool by incorporating it into his freshman introductory class "Explorations of Rhetoric."

The above picture is the result of this classroom and field work experience. Students were asked to gather GPS (global positioning systems) points from around the campus. Students were then introduced to the essentials of GIS and were then showed how to create a database for entry and created the points over an aerial photo of the campus that had been georectified.

Several other professors and students within the program are creating new and fascinating maps which will be shown here as they are produced.

We invite inquiries to the program. Please contact one of the following professors for additional information.
