News from School Year 2005-06

Undergraduate Symposium

The Undergraduate Symposium provides an important venue for students to present a research project. Students presenting this year in the Undergraduate Symposium were Jennifer White, who reviewed a survey she conducted of ridership on the San Diego Trolley and its route to the Mexican border. Jennifer Davies looked at neighborhood bars as "third places" in both Curitiba, Brazil and Detroit, based the the book, The Great Good Place. The presentations were very well received, and we are proud of both Jennifers.

New degree specialization

Ted Ligibel, director of the Historic Preservation Program, is announcing a new graduate degree specialization. Beginning this Fall semester, students will be able to take a M.S. degree in Preservation Planning with a specialization in Downtown Revitalization. The curriculum will include two new courses, a Seminar in Downtown Revitalization taught by Bob Donohue, preservation specialist, and Downtown Planning Studio, taught by Russ Lewis, a planner for Oakland County. Talk with Ted or Norm for more details.

PLACE Club activities

PLACE members are gearing up for this fall's golf outing. Members (clockwise from front) Dave Krzeminski, Michelle Cohen, Nick Sapkiewicz, Lisa Radtke, Ken Bouchard and Jessica Tenbusch are preparing "Save the Date" postcards to be sent out to previous golfers, donors and others. Students who would like to be involved with this year's outing should contact coordinator Dave K. at davidkrzeminski@hotmail.com

Mysteriously, one night the Planning Studio room got a lively new paint job. Rumor has it members of the club redefined the character of the room using Eastern green with "racing stripes"? Students Jill Craciun, Michelle Coehn and Lauren Horton try out the new sofa.

PLACE members would like to have Room 201 ("the glass room") become more of a lounge for socializing of Planning and GIS students. To do that, they would like to put in a sofa and/or comfortable chairs and a coffee table. If you have any of these you'd be willing to donate, please contact one of us and we'll make arrangements.

PLACE Cookie Sale

Tuesday, Feb. 14, PLACE had a cookie sale in the Strong Hall lobby. The Valentines Day motif promoted sales, and 175 dollars was raised for the club's petty cash fund. Good work, bakers and tablesitters.

IN FOND MEMORY

LISA RADTKE

It is with great sadness we share news of the death of Lisa Radtke, a senior in the Urban and Regional Planning Program at Eastern Michigan University. Lisa was a dedicated and well-liked student who enjoyed both learning and sharing. She was a friend to many, and was president of the Public Administration Program's student club, and active in the Planning program's student club, participating in many of its activities. She will be missed greatly by students and faculty. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lisa and her family and friends.

Bob Jones has written a thoughtful remembrance of Lisa.

Grad Planning Program Renamed

Attention, students in the grad Planning program.

The University Admissions Office has just approved officially the name change for the graduate planning program, which will apply to any applicants from this day forward. Instead of applying for the GIS-Planning program (GISP), students will apply for the Urban and Regional Planning Program (URPL). Current students in the GISP program can change the name to URPL on their records if they wish. To do so, see program adviser Norm Tyler. (Note: GIS students are not affected by this change.)

Student Union Tour

Ken Bednark, who is teaching the Housing course this semester, arranged a tour of the new student Union on Thursday, March 16th. Students were able to see the new construction and ask questions about what would be happening there. Also discussed was how the building fit in with the campus master plan.

Studio projects

This Winter semester both the graduate and undergraduate Planning programs had interesting and meaningful studio design projects. These gave a wonderful way for students to be involved with actual clients on current projects, and are an important extension of the classroom experience.

The graduate planning/preservation studio worked directly with the Ypsi DDA on a study of the Cross Street corridor. The goal was to develop a proposal to encourage more student use of the commercial area of Cross Street.

The undergrad studio students developed preliminary proposals for a 400 acre site just south of Dexter, Michigan. The large site has great potential, and the students presented their ideas to the developer's representative and others at the end of the semester.

STATE OF THE PROGRAMS
We've never done this before, but at the beginning of the new school year, it seems appropriate to update students and alumni on the "State of the Programs."

The state of the Planning and GIS programs seems quite good at this time. The university community should benefit from a new president, a new provost and a new dean. We also have Yichun Xie, a GIS/Planning faculty, as our permanent department head, so he understands well the program needs.

The number of students is up significantly, especially in the grad programs. We have a new faculty, Bill Welsh, teaching the techniques and environmental courses, and he brings in his experience working in the south, in Thailand and in Ecuador.

The student club, PLACE, was very active last year and looks to be quite active again this year. President Lauren Horton led a successful golf outing, and has a number of activites already planned for the Fall. The faculty have been traveling this summer--Hugh Semple to Jamaica, Yichun Xie to China, Bill Welsh to Ecuador, and Norm Tyler presented in Nashville.

A number of grad students have completed their "Paper of Publishable Quality, on a variety of topics. See the Curriculums link on the left to review the list.

Alumni have remained an important part of the program, and their involvement through email contacts, suggestions, class visits and general support provides an important link between students and practitioners.

Norm Tyler receives award

Norm Tyler was the recipient of a Teaching Excellence Award from the EMU Alumni Association. He was nominated by alumni from the Planning program, and was honored at a special Saturday morning breakfast ceremony in the McKenny Union ballroom. Family, faculty, alumni, students and friends all attended the special occasion.

Faculty updates

Here's some of the latest news on some of our program faculty:

Rocky Ward and Norm Tyler had an article published in the October edition of Planning magazine. Although the title was printed incorrectly, the article encourages states to mandate historic preservation as part of mandated local comprehensive plans.

Rocky and Norm are also presenting this topic at the annual conference of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) in Kansas City. Bob Jones will also be at the conference presenting his paper, "Can the Center Hold? Detroit and the Shrinking City Syndrome." It examines Detroit regional issues from a political culture perspective.

Bob also is working with the Michigan Suburbs Alliance to help establish internship opportunities and course project possibilities with some of the older suburban communities around the Detroit area. For more about the Michigan Suburbs Alliance see: http://michigansuburbsalliance.org

It has just been announced that Norm will be receiving a Teaching Excellence award from EMU. Nominated by program alumni, the award ceremony will be on Saturday, October 22nd. (P.S.: I'm really greatful to the alums who nominated me.)

2005 Golf outing

Students successfully held this summer's PLACE golf outing, a fund-raiser for the Planning/GIS program's Robert M. Ward Scholarship Fund. Over $3,200 was raised. Congratulations, and thanks to everyone for their support!

Free advice to new planning students

Planning Program alumnus Rodney Nanney has crafted a wonderful open letter written to offer good advice to new urban and regional planning students. It's worth a look.
