Award winners for 2003...

Seven Urban and Regional Planning Program students and one GIS student were recognized at this year's Department Awards ceremony. Undergraduate students Andre Stone and Andrew Armbruster (not shown) and grad student Devany Donigan each received a scholarhip of $750 based on GPA, activity, need and statement of their future in planning. They are shown with department head Barry Fish at the 2003 Awards Celebration.

Academic Excellence awards were given to graduating undergrads Michelle Cousineau, Candice Elkins, Karen Pohl and Chris Gruba for maintaining GPAs of 3.5 or higher. This was an excellent representation of the Planning Program for these awards.

Graduate student Anthony Bedogne received this year's Elwood J.C. Kureth Award for service to the department. He has contributed greatly in coordinating labs and performing other functions in the department.

Yichun Xie, on behalf of the Institute of Geospatial Research and Education (IGRE) presented the first Research Excellence Award to Ling Zhang, who has been involved in a number of important research projects.

As the result of diligent fund-raising by student members of the Planning Awareness Club of Eastern (PLACE) and others, the program's endowed Scholarship Fund now has sufficient resources to offer scholarships to students each year.

The first scholarship of $500 was awarded to graduate student Rodney Nanney in 1999.

A similar scholarship was awarded in 2000 to undergraduate student Chad Jacobs.

Graduate student Mike Zeek and undergrad Karen Pohl were awarded $500 Urban and Regional Planning Program Scholarships for 2001.

Three undergrad students were awarded scholarships of $750 and $900 for 2002. They were Michelle Cousineau, Chris Gruba and Karen Pohl.

We all should feel proud of their distinction. Way to go!

Applications for this year's scholarship(s) will be available midway through the Winter semester. Any full-time Planning or GIS undergrad or grad student is elligible to apply. See Norm Tyler or members of PLACE for more information and updates.
