You can access WebCT using your my.emich user name and password. Log on from the my.emich portal or directly from the WebCT server, webct1.emich.edu.

Do I need to purchase a WebCT access code for my class? |

If your professor is using WebCT and your are officially registered for the course, then you will automatically have access to it. Please contact your professor if you are enrolled, but the course does not show up when you log on WebCT. Your professor will contact WebCT training and support to get this fixed. There is no need to purchase an access code or pay an extra fee to access WebCT at EMU.

I can log onto my.emich, but not WebCT. What should I do? |

First be sure your computer is configured correctly to work with WebCT. You should have installed Sun Java software and run through the browser tuneup. Secondly, make sure all popup killers are disabled or are set up to allow webct1.emich.edu. Lastly, clear the browser cache and cookie cache to remove any Web files that might interfere with WebCT. In rare cases, you may need to reset your my.emich password to synch with WebCT. You can do this at the portal website, my.emich.edu. Contact the IT Help Desk if you need further assistance.

How do I know if my computer has Sun Java on it? |

WebCT has a browser checker built into it. The checker will verify the version of Sun Java installed and check other vital settings of the browser tuneup. The link to the browser checker is in the upper right-hand corner of WebCT when you log on.

Where can I get Sun Java if my computer doesn't have it? |

Sun Java runtime is a free download from the Sun Java website and is needed only for PCs. There is a direct link for downloading it in the "Browser Tuneup" section of this site.

What kinds of things can interfere with WebCT on my computer? |

Popup killers, viruses, ads, and spyware can all interfere with WebCT and the overall operation of your computer. When using WebCT, make sure Windows XP Service Pack 2 popup blockers and other popup killers (AOL IM, Google, Yahoo) are either disabled or set up to allow webct1.emich.edu. Please keep your antivirus software up-to-date and consider running anti-adware and anti-spyware to further protect your computer and the information on it. Viruses can intefere with the overall functioning of your computer, to the point of deleting all or part of the hard drive. Adware is software that pops up adds from the Internet and often redirects your Internet browser to other sites. Spyware tracks your key strokes and mouse clicks. All of these can interfere with WebCT.

How can I protect my computer from viruses, adware, and spyware while using WebCT? |

WebCT does not install viruses, adware, or spyware on your computer. However, certain other websites may install this kind of software, often without your knowledge or permission. Your best defense is to install antivirus, anti-adware and anti-spyware on your computer and keep them up-to-date. How can I print a Microsoft Word document in WebCT? |

Microsoft Word documents in WebCT open in the browser. It is a three-step process to print them:
- Right-click the empty toolbar area at the top of the document. A context menu will open
- Select "Standard" from the context menu. The standard toolbar will open
- Click the printer icon on the standard toolbar. The document will print on your default printer

Why won't the exam window or assignment open in my WebCT course? |

WebCT relies heavily on Java and popup technologies. Popup killers need to be disabled or webct1.emich.edu allowed and Java software needs to be up-to-date.
