The LINGUIST List was founded in December 1989 by Anthony Rodrigues Aristar at the University of Western Australia with 60 subscribers. In 1990 Helen Dry became co-moderator of the list with Anthony Aristar. In 1990 it moved from Australia to Texas A&M University, where it has been ever since. Its aim is to provide a forum where academic linguists can discuss linguistic issues and exchange linguistic information. With the aid of the publishing community and the contributions of the subscribers, it now offers two fellowships to graduate students, who serve in return as editors of the list. The present holders of these fellowships are Ljuba Veselinova, recently of the University of Stockholm and ultimately from Bulgaria, and Ann Dizdar of Texas A&M University. Two other graduate editors, Annemarie Valdez and Ron Reck, are funded by Eastern Michigan University. It keeps a list of curently-available linguistic datasources, and it has a subscription list of 6289. Its membership is spread across 60 countries, divided as follows:
