Conferences
***2008 LOEX Conference*** will be held outside Chicago in Oak Brook, IL on May 1-3, 2008. There is a Call for Proposals with a deadline of Friday, November 16 - submit yours today!
- The conference registration fee has not been finalized, but it will be no more than last year ($290) and possibly a bit less.
- As in previous years, registration will be online-only. It is on Friday, February 8, 2008 at 1PM Eastern.
American Library Association's Midwinter Meeting will be held in Philadelphia, PA, January 11-16, 2008. Advance registration ends 11/30/07.
Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO): the 33rd annual conference will be held on October 25-26, 2007 in Columbus, Ohio. "Innovation Generation: Tools, Techniques, Transformations."
The Brick & Click Libraries Symposium: the 7th Annual conference will be held on November 2, 2007 at Northwest Missouri State University, in Maryville, Missouri.
ACRL/NY Annual Symposium: Library 2.0: A New Social Model in New York, NY on November 30, 2007.
7th Annual Augustana Information Literacy in Academic Libraries Workshop will be held December 10, 2007 at the University of Alberta in, Camrose, Alberta, Canada. "Student Engagement: Connecting with Learners through Interest, Understanding, and Support."
LILAC 2008 (Librarians' Information Literacy Annual Conference) will be held in Liverpool, England, March 17-19, 2008. The call for papers ends December 14th.
Scholarships/Grants/Awards
EBSCO ALA Conference Sponsorship provides ten $1,000 awards for actual reimbursed expenses to help librarians attend ALA's Annual Conference.
Academic/Research Librarian of the Year Award. Send in a nomination to recognize an outstanding member of the library profession who has made a significant national or international contribution to academic or research librarianship and library development. Deadline: December 7, 2007.
ACRL/DLS Haworth Press Distance Learning Librarian Conference Sponsorship Award. Apply/nominate any individual ACRL member working in the field of, or contributing to the success of distance learning librarianship or related library service in higher education. Deadline: December 7, 2007.
Instruction Section: Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian Award. Nominate an individual librarian who has made an especially significant contribution to the advancement of instruction in a college or research library environment. Deadline: December 7, 2007.
Instruction Section: Innovation Award. Nominate a project that demonstrates creative, innovative, or unique approaches to information literacy instruction or programming. Deadline: December 7, 2007.
ACRL News
The ACRL/Instruction Section has issued a Call for Proposals for Current Issue Discussion Groups for ALA Annual 2008. Apply by November 15, 2007.
Practical Strategies for Building a Library 2.0 Game Plan, a webcast, will be October 23, 2007 at 2pm Eastern. Registration is open. ACRL member: $50, ALA member: $75.
Teaching Portfolios for Librarians, an online seminar, will be offered October 29-November 16, 2007. Registration is open. ACRL member: $135, ALA member: $175.
ACRL Council of Liaisons is currently accepting applications for member liaisons to targeted organizations, such as the American Anthropological Association and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. Please send completed applications to frances.maloy@emory.edu and to emandel@ala.org. The deadline for applications is November 16, 2007.
ACRL invites applications for Immersion '08 Program which will be held at the University of California, San Diego, July 27-August 1, 2008. Immersion '08 will be four-and-one-half days of active learning and intensive interaction among academic librarians. December 3, 2007 is the deadline to apply.
Call for papers and book reviews: LOEX Quarterly
Reach out to the LOEX membership and share your instruction ideas and innovations. The focus is on substantive, but practical articles, so do not miss an opportunity to share with others your interesting programs, experiences, ideas or insights. Also, LOEX is currently accepting book reviews of non-library books whose discussion of trends, technologies, or ideas might be useful for library instructors to consider. Submissions are relatively short: between 700-1500 words. Email loex@emich.edu if you have any questions. Deadline for the Winter issue: January 15, 2008.
Public Services Quarterly is currently soliciting manuscripts to be considered for upcoming issues; it also has an opening for the editor of the Best of the Literature column. For information about submitting manuscripts, plesae see their website. If you are interested in applying, contact Wayne Bivens-Tatum, the current column editor, at rbivens@princeton.edu.

"Wikipedia published its 2-millionth article in the English language version of the anyone-can-edit encyclopedia. On September 10, an article on "El Hormiguero," a popular Spanish TV show, was created by Wikipedia contributor Zzxc to become the 2 millionth article in the English Wikipedia. The English version of Wikipedia alone has signed up 3.4 million volunteer contributors."
