Eastern Michigan University Police Department implemented a bicycle patrol program in 1995. The officers complete a 32 hour mountain bike certification training program which includes riding techniques, bicycle maintenance, and tactical procedures. The program is supervised by Sgt. David Shefferly, and currently the bicycle officers are Officer Keith Shimanek,  Officer Andrea Elliott, Officer Shana K Thompson, Officer Susan McLennan, Officer Joe Torres, Officer Cathy Wilman and Officer Darrin Taylor . The hours of operation are from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00am.

Initially the bicycle patrol program was implemented as another community oriented policing tool, which has proven to be an asset. We have discovered that the bicycle patrol officers' response time to calls for service were generally lower than their counter-parts in patrol vehicles.
