EMU Campus Police Safety Tips For
Winter/Spring Break
Spring Break Personal Safety Tips & Precautionary
Measures to Consider when traveling in the U.S. and Abroad
• Make sure family and friends know your
departure and arrival times, where you are staying, and the
phones numbers
of where to reach you. Set regular check-in times, follow-through
with them and use the internet for a source of communicating
with people at home.
• Keep track of your personal possessions
and baggage at all times.
• Do not assume meeting new people have
your best interest at heart. Use good judgment with your decisions
when meeting
strangers.
• Set up a ‘buddy system’.
Preplan with your friends to look after one another when drinking
or becoming intoxicated.
Do not walk alone, do not go to the restroom by yourself and
always stay with your group.
• Should a member of your group become
intoxicated, never leave them alone, seek medical assistance
immediately.
• Plan ahead on how much you will drink,
set a limit for yourself and a plan to follow-through with
that plan. Talk to
a friend about when that friend can help intervene and help you
return to your hotel.
• Know the drinking laws at your travel
destination. You can ask your travel agent for this information
• Be aware that excessive drinking can
lead to more instances of violence and sexual assaults.
• Always look and act with self confidence (walk, sit & talk).
Be aware of your surroundings and do not allow yourself to be
taken to isolated areas and be aware of pick pockets.
• Do not bring strangers back to your hotel
room and do not give out to much personal information, use
common sense and
good judgment.
Low Risk Drinking Tips
• Abstain from drinking if you are under
21 years of age and always consider your limits before you
begin drinking. Eat
a full meal before beginning to drink and sip drinks slowly,
rather than tossing them back or bingeing
• Drink no more than 2 alcoholic beverages
a day (men). Drink no more than 1 alcoholic beverage a day
(women). Space
drinks over a span of time to slow the rate of intoxication.
Drink non-alcoholic drinks between alcoholic drinks
• Drink diluted drinks such as: beer, wine or mixed drinks
versus ‘shots’ and avoid ‘spiked’ drinks.
Abstain from drinking alcohol when taking medication or other
drugs.
• Do not lose site of your drink throughout
the evening and drink for taste not for the sole purpose of
getting drunk.
• Be familiar with the laws regarding possession
of alcoholic beverages and drugs (drinking laws at traveled
destinations may
differ from U.S. State laws)
• Do not get involved in illegal drugs
while visiting countries outside the U.S. (violations of certain
laws may have
severe penalties, including incarceration or death penalties)
• DO NOT DRIVE AFTER DRINKING. Choose a
designated driver or public transportation
• Drinking to intoxication makes it easier
for a person to become either the victim or the perpetrator
of a sexual assault
or other crimes. Do not accept open drinks from strangers.
• Binge drinking behaviors can result in: Drunk Driving, Public
Intoxication and Destruction of Property. Avoid binge drinking.
• Students with higher alcohol consumption
are more likely to become victims of sexual assaults. Acquaintance
rape and Robbery
top the list of crimes committed against college students
Travel-Hotel
• Be familiar with your itinerary before
traveling. Leave a copy of your itinerary information at home
for family in the
event of an emergency. Make a copy of all personal information
including Picture ID, Credit Cards and Passports (take copies
with you) and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
• Always make sure to lock your hotel door.
Do not leave valuables in your room and look through the peep-hole
before
opening door. Familiarize self with emergency exits and stairwells
and do not overcrowd elevators
