If you are eligible for a Top-Up or a Kicker you may be required to provide proof of your eligibility
You must verify your enrollment the last day of every month during the semester you are certified for benefits. Failure to verify will result in failure to receive payment from the VA.
Chapter 30 benefit recipients may request an advance payment. This payment is a lump sum payment of 60% of tuition and fees. Advanced payment must be requested 30 days prior to the start of the semester. To request an Advanced Payment please speak with the Certifying Official at the Office of Veteran Services.
Chapter 30(A): Current Active Duty
Current Active Duty personnel receive tuition and fees for their use of the G.I. Bill. They are entitled to 36 months of benefits.

Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation
Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment is a program to assist eligible veterans in achieving maximum independence in their daily life, restore their self esteem, and aid them in becoming a contributing part of society. Eligible veterans may receive up to 48 months of training benefits; however, the length of the program is based on the individualized written rehabilitation plan
Eligibility is based on you meeting the following conditions:
- You served on or after September 16, 1940 AND
- Your service-connected disabilities are rated at least 20% disabling by VA AND
- You need Vocational Rehabilitation to overcome an employment handicap AND
- It has been less than 12 years since VA notified you of your eligibility

Chapter 35: Spouses & Dependents
Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance is an education benefit for the spouses and children of certain veterans. Eligible persons can receive up to 45 months of benefits for:
College, Business, Technical or Vocational Courses
Correspondence Courses (spouses only)
High School Diploma or GED
Apprenticeship/Job TrainingWho is Eligible?
You may be eligible if the veteran:
- is found by VA to be totally and permanently disabled from a service-related disability, OR
- died because of a service-related disability
AND You meet one of the following conditions:
- you are married to the veteran, OR
- you are the deceased veteran’s surviving spouse, and you haven’t remarried, OR
- you are the veteran’s child and you’re at least 18 years old.
- Generally, you must use this benefit within the following time periods:
- Spouse/Surviving spouse: 10 years from the date VA finds you eligible
- Child: Until age 26

Chapter 1606: National Guard
You may be an eligible reservist or National Guard member if:
- After 6/30/85, you signed a six-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserve, AND
- You completed your Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT), AND
- You have received your Highs School Diploma or GED, AND
- You are in good standing in a drilling Selected Reserve Unit
Your eligibility generally ends when you leave the Selected Reserves.
Tuition Assistance
There are two types of assistance: federal tuition assistance and state education reimbursement.
Federal Tuition Assistance (ACES) Program: This program will fund up to 100% of tuition costs not to exceed the annually designated caps of up to $250/credit hour and $4,500/academic year for undergraduate study, graduate study and vocational training.
State Education Reimbursment Program: This program will fund up to an equivalent of 50% of the total cost of tuition, not to exceed $2,000 in an academic year. (** If 100% of your tuition is paid for by federal tuition assistance, you will not be eligible for SERP for that tuition amount **)
To Apply:
Log onto https://www.nationalguardbenefits.com and submit an application electronically or via mail. See your unit representative for an application (DA Form 2171-E) and Statement of Understanding.
Applications for Army Federal Tuition Assistance must be turned in before classes begin, but not later than 14 days after the start of classes. A separate application must be completed for each semester. E6's and below must obtain the signature of the unit commander or designated representative in section 4. Once approved, the DA Form 2171-E should be submitted to the Student Accounting Office in 203 Pierce Hall.

Chapter 1607 is a benefit for certain individuals who were activated after September 11, 2001 either eligible for educational benefits or eligible for increased benefits.
Eligibility: You may be an eligible reservist or National Guard member if:
- You served on active duty on or after September 11, 2001 under title 10 U.S. Code for a contingency operation and who serves at least 90 consecutive days or more
- National Guard members also are eligible if their active duty is under section 502(f), title 32 U.S.C. and they serve for 90 consecutive days when authorized by the President or Secretary of Defense for a national emergency and is supported by federal funds.
- Individuals are eligible as soon as they reach the 90-day point whether or not they are currently on active duty.
- DOD will fully identify contingency operations that qualify for benefits under chapter 1607.
- Disabled members who are injured or have an illness or disease incurred or aggravated in the line of duty and are released from active duty before completing 90 consecutive days are also eligible.
