How do I start to receive my G.I. Bill benefits?
You must complete an initial application for benefits with the Dept. of Veteran Affairs. After being accepted to EMU and registering for your courses you must complete an EMU GI Bill Notification Form (previously known as the Form 1). This form must be completed for every term you intend to receive benefits. Once your certification has been sent to the VA you must verify your enrollment no sooner than the last day of the month for every month of the certified term.
Do I have to verify my enrollment?
All chapters with the exception of Chapter 35 Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance are required to verify to verify their enrollment. Verification is done on the last day of every month for the period of certification. To verify you have two options.
a. Call 1-877-823-2378
b. Or visit W.A.V.E. online https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/default.cfm
If I change my enrollment do I have to notify anyone?
You must notify the VA and the Office of Compliance if there are any changes to your enrollment status. This includes additions, drops, withdrawals, incompletes and any situation that could have mitigating circumstances.
Can I take courses at another school and receive my benefits?
Yes. You must notify the school that you will be graduating from, also known as your “ Parent School”, of your intent to take courses at another institution. You must also provide the Parent School with the name of the “Secondary School”, the courses you are taking, the date ranges of the term for the specified courses, and the courses must be transferable and be a requirement for graduation under your specific degree and program requirements. You must also notify the Secondary School’s Certifying Official of your registration and intent to receive benefits at their school. If you are enrolled concurrently at two institutions, both schools will submit a certification to the VA for the courses at their respective institutions. To check the transferability of courses please visit the Transfer Course Information. http://ict.emich.edu/service/online/tranequiv/
If I am eligible for more than one chapter of benefits can I claim both chapters?
No. If you are eligible for more than one chapter of benefits then you must choose which chapter of benefits you would like to receive. If you require assistance in determining which chapter is best for your needs then contact our office or visit the Montgomery G.I. Bill website at www.gibill.va.gov.
How many months of benefits can I receive benefits?
Usually a person is eligible for 36 months of benefits. If a person is eligible for more than one chapter they can receive an additional twelve months for a total of 48 months. No one can receive more than 48 months of benefits. There are specific regulations that govern the different chapters so to learn more please visit the Montgomery G.I. Bill website at www.gibill.va.gov.
How long does it take to process my certification paperwork?
Our office will process your paperwork in a matter of only a few days. The VA Regional Processing Office in St. Louis, MO processes all documentation from every school within our region spanning 17 states. The volume of documentation they process is large and it can take up to six to eight weeks to process any new documentation that we send from our office. It is imperative that you be proactive in completing the required documentation in a timely manner to combat the processing times required by the Regional Processing Office.
Is there a restriction on what courses I can take while I receive G.I. Bill benefits?
Yes, you can only receive educational benefits from the G.I. Bill for courses that are required for your degree requirements and specific major, minor, and general education requirements. If you register for courses that do not meet the requirements listed in the catalog, then you will not be able to receive benefits for that course. If you take a course that is not listed in the catalog as a graduation requirement, but the course will be substituted, then you will be required to provide documentation from your academic advisor within your program stating they approve the substitution.
What do I do if I get notified that I am getting deployed?
Upon notification that you will be deployed you will need to provide our office with a copy of your official orders, a power of attorney, and pickup/complete a copy of the EMU Pre-Deployment Package. You may download the package in our forms section. The first Out-Processing station is the Office of Compliance Veteran Services.
