"Those states with the highest number of adults with college degrees have the lowest unemployment rates, the highest personal income growth, and the fastest growing economies in this nation. More than any other factor, this one - a highly educated population - drives a state's economy."
EMU wants to offer students the means to complete their degree and take advantage of the opportunities a college degree offers.
The Office of Admissions is available Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. & every Saturday from 9 a.m. - noon for information, tours & on-site admissions decisions. If you are unfamiliar with navigating the university environment, or if you don't know what questions to ask, this is the place to begin your journey.
Bottom Line: How do I get from where I am today to my college degree?
- Think about what program of study (major) you might like to pursue. EMU's undergraduate programs and graduate programs lists can get you started. But it's okay if you are not sure - many EMU students start out in a general studies program, explore some possible areas, and decide as they go along. EMU's academic advisers can also assist you in this important decision.
- Apply for admission to EMU. After we receive all the necessary information from you, EMU will contact you within about 2-3 weeks to let you know of your admissions status.
- Consider how you will finance your education, which may include financial aid such as loans, scholarships and grants. If you are employed, your employer may offer tuition reimbursement--be sure to inquire with your Human Resources office. Even if you do not think you have many personal resources available to pay for college, EMU will help you explore all your options. And most people find that an EMU education is surprisingly affordable.
- Decide whether you will take classes on EMU's main campus or one of our satellite locations in Brighton, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Jackson, Livonia, Monroe, Traverse City and Washtenaw County. (NOTE: Not all programs are offered in all locations. A list of programs offering classes at our satellite locations is here). All students are also eligible to take online classes in programs that provide this option.
- Work with an academic adviser to determine what classes to take. If you already have college credit from EMU or elsewhere, this adviser can help you determine how your previous credit can apply to your new program.
- Register for classes. After you are admitted to EMU, you will receive a my.emich user account and will be able to use that account to sign up for classes and get started on the path toward your degree.
- Continue in the course of study recommended by your adviser. Check your progress toward your degree each semester using the CAPP progress-toward-degree service in my.emich. As you approach completion of your degree, you will apply for a degree audit to ensure that you have taken all the required courses to earn your desired degree. Once you have satisfactorily completed all the requirements of your degree, you will be eligible to graduate.
- Attend commencement and receive your diploma!
