Professional

Dr. Barrett’s varied teaching and research interests span social work and criminology.  Her most recent research has been particularly focused on corporate crime and crimes against the environment.

Dr. Barrett’s work in these areas began while earning her bachelor’s degree in social work.  During that time, she volunteered with the Salvation Army’s Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Program, and interned with Chautauqua County’s Child Protective Services’ Sexual Abuse Specialty Team.  Dr. Barrett continued working with children and families for several years.  This included working with children diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disorders as a counselor at Camp Starfish and as an assistant teacher at the Judge Baker Children Center’s Manville School.  Dr. Barrett was also a research assistant on the National Institute on Drug Abuse grant project “Brief Intervention for Drug Use and HIV/STD Risk Prevention Among Truants: Brief Counseling for Truant Youth and Their Parents.”

While working toward her doctorate, Dr. Barrett’s coursework provided her the opportunity to research corporate power, with particular interest in environmental crime and justice (“green criminology”).  Her work in this area has largely explored how the state defines, controls, or responds to environmental crime and injustice.  In 2017, she collaborated with Drs. Lynch, Long, and Stretesky on the book “Green Criminology: Crime, Justice, and the Environment” (University of California Press).

Today, Dr. Barrett remains engaged in teaching, research, and service.  She currently serves on the editorial board for the Journal of White Collar and Corporate Crime, the Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse, and the Sociological Quarterly.  To date, she has authored or co-authored a combined 40+ peer-reviewed articles, chapters, encyclopedia entries, and book reviews.
