Safety Tips
By taking a few common-sense precautions, you can help
keep yourself safe, and prevent yourself from becoming
a victim of crime both on and off campus.
- Lock your door. It may sound like
common sense, but most burglaries on the EMU campus
occur when students,
faculty and employees fail to lock their dorm room,
apartment, or office door. You should
make it a habit to lock your door even if you are
only out for a few minutes, or, in the case of residents,
when you are sleeping.
- Say “no” to tailgaters.
Do not hold your exterior residence hall door open
for strangers or allow strangers to slip in behind
you. Holding the door for someone may seem like the
polite thing to do, but it allows thieves and vandals
to access locked buildings they could not normally
enter. If a stranger does slip in behind you and you
don't feel comfortable asking them use their own access
card, notify the front desk personnel of your residence
hall.
- Never let others use your swipe
card or door key. Allowing others unfettered
access to your room puts yourself and your belongings,
as well as other residents, at risk.
- Do not leave your personal
belongings unattended,
even for a few minutes.
- Travel in groups at night or call SEEUS at 734.48-SEEUS
to arrange for an escort.
- Program the EMU Department
of Public Safety’s
phone number, 734.487.1222, into your cell
phone. It will allow you to receive a faster response
in a time of crisis.
- Sign up for EMU's emergency alerts to receive emergency text message alerts on your cell
phone.
- Take note of where the emergency
assistance centers are located around campus.
Learn to use the centers by viewing this
short video.
- Report suspicious persons or
activities. If
something just doesn’t look right, report it to
Public Safety, 734.487.1222.
- Never allow a stranger to lead
you into an isolated
area where you will be more vulnerable. If you are planning
to meet a stranger, choose a public place with a
lot of people around.
- Be aware of your surroundings. As you are walking
on campus, keep your head up and look around you.
This will let others know you are paying attention
to what is happening around you.
- If you think you are being
followed, head immediately
into a public building and seek out other people. Contact
SEEUS or Public
Safety (both at 734.487.1222) for an escort to
your car, classroom, or residence hall.
- Park your vehicle in well-lit,
well traveled areas of the parking lot and keep it
locked. When you return to your car, keep your keys
in your hand, ready to unlock the door so you can
drive away.
- Keep valuable items out of
sight in your car, your
residence hall room, and on your person.
- Report obscene or harassing
phone calls to the
EMU Department of Public Safety immediately.
- Do not give money to panhandlers,
and report their location immediately to the EMU Department
of Public Safety at 734.487.1222.
