2003 Recipients

Annaliese Gehres

Annaliese Gehres, graduate recipient, recently completed an internship with Leaven, Inc. in Lansing, MI: a nonprofit organization which provides resources and training for social justice issues, including sexual justice. Ms. Gehres' work in Leaven, Inc. involved confronting homophobia and heterosexism with community education workshops. She is currently active in the Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project and the Speaker's Bureau of the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Affairs at the University of Michigan, which also provides speakers' panels at Eastern Michigan University. 

Jessica Jennrich, graduate recipient, is a graduate assistant in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC) at Eastern Michigan University , appointed by the Women's Studies Program. As director of administration for LGBTRC, she has revived Sisters of Sappho, a social and educational group for campus women. Ms. Jennrich was active in the 2003 Michigan Safe Schools Summit, hosted by Eastern Michigan University, and she worked with the Triangle Foundation to promote this event and to advocate the National Day of Silence in April.

Gregory Varnum, undergraduate recipient, organized a campus showing and discussion of the HBO Film, The Laramie Project, as a resident advisor in University Housing. Mr. Varnum proposed the Safe Haven program for University Housing, which is an ally training and support program for Housing staff. He is currently director of events for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center at Eastern Michigan University and organizes many campus events, including the campus film festivals Reel Queers, during both semester of the 2003-2004 academic year.
