National Surveys

CIRP- Cooperative Institutional Research Program (Yearly)

The American Council of Education and the University of California at Los Angeles conduct the CIRP survey. The national sample has been conducted for thirty-nine years and provides an annual report of national normative data on the characteristics of students attending college and universities as first-time, full-time freshmen. Eastern Michigan University can use this information to develop longitudinal data on freshmen, and provide comparisons with national norms and peers. The goal would be to collect data on all freshmen.

CIRP Freshmen Survey

YFCY-Your First College Year (Every Two Years)

CIRP freshmen survey data on incoming first-year students provide valuable baseline information on short and long-term longitudinal assessment. Data collected via the Your First College Year (YFCY) instrument provides an early snapshot of how students are developing during college and provide critical clues about students' intended paths through college. If Eastern Michigan University uses the CIRP in conjunction with YFCY, this will provide valuable information on all aspects of the first-year experience.

This survey was developed at the Policy Center on the First Year of College at Brevard College in conjunction with the American Council of Education at UCLA.
The goal would be to collect data on all freshmen in winter term.

NSSE- National Survey of Student Engagement (Every Two Years)

George Kuh of Indiana University, Bloomington developed the National Survey of Student Engagement. The instrument was designed to provide data to colleges and universities, to be used for improving undergraduate education, to provide state accountability and facilitate national and sector benchmarking efforts. The instrument will provide national benchmarks of effective educational practice in the following areas: Level of Academic Challenge, Student Interaction with Faculty Members, Active and Collaborative Learning, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Campus Environment. The instrument is administered to freshmen and senior during the winter term. Total number of participants is expected to be 2,000.

FSSE-National Survey of Faculty Student Engagement (Same Year as NSSE)

George Kuh of Indiana University, Bloomington developed a faculty companion survey to the NSSE. The faculty version focuses on: faculty perceptions of how often their students engage in different activities; the importance faculty place on various areas of learning and development; the nature and frequency of faculty-students interactions; and how faculty members organize class time. FSSE provides campuses with information they can use for faculty development, workshops and retreats, assessment and continuous improvement, and curriculum reform. Faculty support will be critical for the benefits the survey can bring.
