Graduate Certificate

The 18-credit graduate certificate in hotel and restaurant management is designed to assist returning students who have completed a bachelor’s degree and would like to change careers, or transition into the master’s of science program. This certificate program allows students to build on existing management skills and develop analytical skills necessary in today’s complex business environment or can be applied toward the master’s of science in hotel and restaurant management.

Graduate certificate in hotel and restaurant management

Required courses (six credits)

  • Advanced Topics in Food Systems Management (three credits)
  • Advanced Topics in Hospitality Management (three credits)

Supporting courses (12 credits)

  • Human Resource Management in Hospitality and Nutrition Services (three credits)
  • Service Strategies for the Hospitality Industry (three credits)
  • International Hospitality Management (three credits)
  • Strategic Management in the Hospitality Industry (three credits)
  • Managing Financial Systems in the Hospitality Industry (three credits)
  • Hospitality Education Teaching Workshop (three credits)


Deficiencies
            Courses determined in consultation with program advisor based on undergraduate degree and prior work experience.

Admission requirements
Formal application is made through Eastern Michigan University Graduate Admissions.  (graduate.admissions@emich.edu) Eligibility is based on a bachelor’s degree with an overall undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher from an accredited institution and two letters of recommendation. International students must have the following: TOEFL (score of 213 or higher on computer based), MELAB (score of 77 or higher) or IELTS (score of 6.5 or higher).

Financial aid
A wide variety of grants, loans and scholarships are available to Eastern Michigan University students through programs administered by the Office of Financial Aid.
