About the Program
The vocational major is designed to prepare teachers of
vocational subjects for senior high school and community
college vocational education programs. Prospective teachers
are authorized to teach in vocational and trade related
subjects such as construction, automotive mechanics, graphics
and printing, metal trades, aircraft mechanics, and numerous
other fields. Graduates who complete this major and have
a minimum of two years work experience in a certifiable
occupational area will qualify for the Temporary Vocational
Authorization to teach in a specific occupational area.
Options for cooperative work experience studies are available
to the student as partial credit toward the occupational
requirement. This major must be completed in conjunction
with the technology education curriculum. This major qualifies
individuals to teach only in select occupational areas.
The Temporary Vocational Authorization is valid for six
years. By that time, individuals must have completed additional
requirements to qualify for the Occupational Education Certificate.
This major provides favorable opportunities for community
college transfer students who have completed a technical
major at the community college and who wish to teach in
a specific occupational subject area in the senior high
school or community college. Individuals currently teaching
in an vocational subject area under the Annual Vocational
Authorization would also find this major to be a desirable
option.
Successful completion of this course of studies, in the
context of other program requirements, qualifies the student
for recommendation for certification for the Michigan Department
of Education Secondary Provisional Certificate endorsed
in vocational trades, certification code VT. There is currently
no certification test for this area.
