How is APO different from other fraternities?

There is certainly a stigma surrounding the world of fraternities and sororities. Many people associate these groups with drinking parties, hazing, and other dangerous activities. When considering joining a frat or sorority, it is good to keep in mind that there many different types- some good, some not so good.

But Alpha Phi Omega is especially different. Many of its members refer to it as “a service organization with Greek letters.” We are a fraternity that has community (and national) service as its main focus, and we keep this in mind with nearly everything we do. We do not own a house, nor do we participate in hazing. In fact, we have a strict policy against it. We do, however, work with other fraternities and sororities on projects (though we are prohibited by Alpha Phi Omega Bylaws from joining inter-fraternity councils).

So why are we a fraternity when that word has such a bad reputation? Because we keep in mind what ‘fraternity’ really is; our handbook says it best:

“We believe that Alpha Phi Omega captures the best parts of the FRATERNITY ideal. FRATERNITY implies a common bond, a united army that can go anywhere and conquer anything. It is an alliance that is life long. This unselfish sharing of ideas, interests, successes and even failures is indeed what FRATERNITY is all about. And that is what Alpha Phi Omega is all about.”
