Frequently Asked Questions

Why become a pledge?

To meet new people and develop new friendships, while providing service on campus and in the community. Get more out of your college experience than a degree!

How do I sign up to become a pledge?

Send an email to: membershiplambdaphi@gmail.com, or look out for information during rush weeks.

What does the pledging process consist of?

See our pledge policy for requirements.

How will the chapter support me throughout my pledging process?

You will be given a 'big brother' who will be able to help you. The pledge educator, along with all chapter members, will also help you get the information and support you need during this time.

Is hazing a part of rush?

NO. By all rules associated with Alpha Phi Omega and Eastern Michigan University, there will never be hazing of any kind.

You call it a fraternity- but aren't you co-ed?

We are still classified as a fraternity. Alpha Phi Omega was, at one time, an all-male fraternity. Women are now admitted as members (in fact, many chapters have a majority of women), but "fraternity" remains the name. But yes, the EMU chapter of Alpha Phi Omega is co-ed.

I have heard APO referred to as a service organization with Greek letters. How is Alpha Phi Omega different from other fraternities?

APO differs from fraternities in many ways.  A few examples include: very low dues, no fraternity house, and non-alchol APO events. APO is focused on fostering leadership skills, developing lifelong friendships, and providing service to others. See the It's Not Easy Being Greek page for more details.

There are certain types of service my friends and I don't like to do. For instance, I can't do much physically demanding work, and my friends don't like to work in hospitals. Should we still pledge?

Yes, you should!  APO provides many different types of service opportunities during the semester,  and you will be able to pick which ones you want to take part in. See the list of projects from last semester to get an idea of the variety of projects in which we involve ourselves.

How much does activation cost, and how much will dues be once I am an active member?

There is a $32.00 non-refundable initiation fee. This is paid when you go through the initiation ceremony to become a pledge. When you have completed your pledge term there is a $35.00 non-refundable activation fee. When you are an active member of the chapter the dues are as follow:

Fall - $35.00  Winter - $15.00

What will my requirements be once I am an active member?

When you become an active member you will need to attend chapter meetings and complete 20 hours of service per semester.

How can I ask a question that isn't answered here?
