Ralitza Kuncheva, an MFA painting student was killed tragically in a car accident in mid-December 2007. With permission from her family we chose to begin the semester with an exhibition of her work from her studio.
Inspired by the Alfred E. Neuman exhibition in Ford Gallery, IGG is hosting its own show of MAD Magazine-inspired artwork. We asked students to create artwork in any media. The only guideline was that the work must be related to MAD Magazine, the Alfred E. Neuman character, or any other MAD related materials.
"Surface and Structure" is a collaborative exhibition between more than 20 advanced sculpture and advanced drawing students sponsored by professors Jen Locke and Brian Nelson. It will examine the relationship between form and mark, color and surface, and the working processes related to the fields of sculpture and drawing.
Rob Todd, a BFA sculpture student exhibits his conceptual mechanical creations. "My sculptures primarily deal with humor, irony, cynicism, sarcasm, and commentary on perceptions of what art should or should not be. In the end I want the viewer to look at my sculpture, laugh, and then begin to think about what else I’m trying to say beyond the humor." The exhibition also featured furniture work from three semesters.
Perrin, primarily a painter and sculptor, describes her work as, "art about things that all people have some sort of experience with or knowledge of in order to try to communicate my thoughts and feelings in a common language." She deals with two primary themes in her work - war and the past. "One of my main concerns is how people become desensitized and uncaring about these two things, although they both remain."
"My sculptures are figures made with packaging tape and other mixed media, including fabric, wire, and rubber latex. I want [the packaging tape] to show [the mermaid's] mythological qualities. According to stories, they would lure people with their beauty and then steal their soul."
Graphic Design functions through the presentation of the familiar while seducing the viewer with the unexpected. Through modes of personal narratives and/or fixed methods, my work explores the intersecting of identifiable, but initially unrelated elements.
The power of attraction investigates human order. What is it that attracts us to certain things and why? I use the Native American Power Animal guide as a primal reference to this mystery. What animal are you drawn to and why?
An art battle is a spectator-juried competition. Artists were given three hours to create a piece of artwork, everyone voted on their favorite, and the top three received cash prizes!
Willcock and Howell exhibit their prints and drawings.
Fleck's work hails from a wide range of influences and media -- Pop Art and Legos to Politics and Photography.
The Ypsi Pho' Show was a dynamic exhibition of photography by you. The Student Gallery walls were peppered with photos of Ypsilanti, the EMU campus, students, Ypsi landmarks, etc.
Every semester the IGG features a particular art connectration or course. For the Fall '08 semester, IGG asked the textiles department to create an exhibition. Sponsored by Professor Brooks Stevens, six textiles students (Suzanne Boissy, Rebecca Hinton, Nicole Hoffman, Suzanne Lalonde, Michele Montour, & Victoria Weeber) produced "Rethinking Surface".
When two (or more) students are paired together to create art... Collabulous! One part art students, one part non-art students, one part Honors students... Collabulous. Besides the ridiculous name, the outcome is unknown! Visit the Student Gallery to see the outcome.
