Phi Alpha Theta |
|
Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society, works to promote the discipline of history by encouraging excellence in the study and teaching of history, providing forums for the exploration of the past, and by fostering collegiality among students and faculty in the historical discipline. Since its founding in 1921 at the University of Arkansas, Phi Alpha Theta has grown to over 800 chapters. Eastern’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (Alpha Beta Mu) was established in the fall of 1984 with the initiation of new members in a ceremony at McKenny Union. Since that time hundreds of students have joined this honor society on our campus. The Honor Society has many events throughout the year. These events include trips to museums such as the Arab-American Museum, Greenfield Village, and the Holocaust Museum. There are also various talks on-campus with History Professors as the featured speakers. These talks have included presentations and discussions on the Underground Railroad, Women and women’s movements in History, as well as a presentation on the oldest Phoenician Text. We also have several informal brown-bag lunch seminars throughout the year, including a Meet and Greet of the new History Faculty and a talk about a book that a History Professor just published. Finally, students get the change to participate in a Regional Conference every year and a Bi-Annual Conference every two years where they present papers in a competition on various historical topics. Each winter semester students have the opportunity to apply to Phi Alpha Theta. Once students are accepted into Phi Alpha Theta they are invited to attend the annual initiation ceremony. Requirements for applying to Phi Alpha Theta are listed below. |
