André
Stone grew up in the Pacific Northwest. He moved to Michigan in 2002 to complete his
degree in urban and regional planning. He is known by his classmates as a
bicycle fanatic and activist. André has been responsible for numerous
accomplishments during his time at Eastern. For PLACE, he has organized
several tours to sites around SE Michigan, including the highly
successful Discover Detroit excursions. He has helped organize and spoken
at International Planning Awareness Day, written three articles for the
Journal of PLACE, and currently does a lot of fund raising. His other
campus activities include coordinating events at Hillel,
EMU's Jewish House, and leading Eastern's Curling Team to a national title
last March. Other favorite activities include mountaineering, whitewater,
exercise, recycling, urban exploration, reading, and environmental and
political activism.
As
far as planning goes, André is focused on urban design and redevelopment.
He lived in Germany for 6 months and has
visited twelve countries thus far; he hopes to someday emulate the
auto-free, high-density style of planning embraced in the many places he
has visited. His immediate plans after graduating in December are to move
to Grand Rapids to be with his partner,
Ann, then return to Tacoma, Washington.
