Student participants in the Undergraduate Symposium may be eligible to apply for a number of financial awards.
Graduate-level awards
University Fellowship Award for Symposium Participants
Eastern Michigan University is pleased to announce the availability of 20, $1,000 awards to encourage student participants in the Undergraduate Symposium to continue their graduate studies at Eastern Michigan University. Priority for award offers will be made to eligible students planning to enroll full-time (8 credit hours) at the graduate level the following fall. Additional pro-rated awards may be made to part-time graduate students, pending availability of funds.
Consideration for an award requires: participation as a student presenter in the current year, completion of undergraduate degree by August of that year, minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (if more than 20 students apply and meet the minimum eligibility requirements, all applicants will be ranked by GPA and award offers made as funding allows), application and admission to a graduate degree program at Eastern Michigan University, and enrollment as an EMU graduate student for the following fall.

Undergraduate Scholarships
Rich Baird Undergraduate Symposium Scholarship for Leadership
This endowed scholarship is a non-renewable award designed to aid an Undergraduate Symposium student participant who has demonstrated leadership to the actual event (EMU Undergraduate Symposium), the University and/or the larger community. Award eligibility includes: participation as a student presenter in the current year's event, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, and full-time EMU student status.
Ronald W. Collins Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Undergraduate Symposium Participants
This non-renewable scholarship is designed to aid two current year Undergraduate Symposium participants who have also presented at a previous Symposium to further their undergraduate studies at EMU. Application is open to qualified EMU students from any discipline of the University.
Award eligibility includes: past student presenter and a current year participant in the Undergraduate Symposium, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours per semester) for the fall and/or winter terms of the following academic year.
Barry A. Fish Undergraduate Symposium Scholarship
This non-renewable award is designed to aid a Symposium participant from the College of Arts and Sciences in further undergraduate study at EMU.
Award eligibility includes: participation as a student presenter in the current year’s Symposium, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours per semester) for the fall and/or winter terms of the following academic year.
Elwood J. C. Kureth Scholarship
This non-renewable award is designed to aid a Symposium participant from the College of Arts and Sciences in further undergraduate study at EMU.
Award eligibility includes: participation as a student presenter in the current year’s Symposium, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours per semester) for the fall and/or winter terms of the following academic year.
Donald M. Loppnow Endowed Student Research Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is a non-renewable award designed to aid an Undergraduate Symposium student participant. Award eligibility includes: participation as a student presenter in the current year's event, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, and full-time EMU student status.
Bruce K. Nelson Scholarship
This non-renewable award is designed to aid an Undergraduate Symposium or Graduate Research Fair participant in further undergraduate study at EMU. Award is alternated between the two events (even years – undergraduate award; odd years – graduate award).
Award eligibility at the undergraduate level includes: participation as a student presenter in the current year’s event, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours per semester) for the fall and/or winter terms of the following academic year.
John W. Porter Student Research Excellence Scholarship
This endowed scholarship is a non-renewable award designed to aid an Undergraduate Symposium student participant from the arts and a Graduate Research Fair student participant from the College of Technology. Award eligibility includes: participation as a student presenter in the current year’s event, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, and full-time EMU student status.
Undergraduate Symposium Silver Anniversary Scholarship Series
Eight (8) non-renewable scholarships awarded to Symposium student participants as designated: (1) College of Business, (1) College of Education, (1) College of Health and Human Services, (1) College of Technology, and (4) College of Arts and Sciences - one each in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences.
Award eligibility includes: participation as a student presenter in the current year’s Symposium, at least a 3.0 cumulative EMU grade point average, attend EMU as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours per semester) for the fall and/or winter terms of the following academic year

Symposium Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF)
For the academic year 2009-10 there are 38 students –– from across all academic disciplines –– at the undergraduate and graduate level that are working with faculty mentors as either Symposium Undergraduate Research Fellows or Graduate Fair Research Fellows. These student awards are annual awards that can be renewed upon student interest and faculty mentor support.
Each fellow is expected to conduct research during the academic year of appointment and present the outcomes of the research at their respective event, either the Undergraduate Symposium or the Graduate Research Fair. Undergraduate students, especially students who will be new to EMU may find additional information about these fellow awards at the SURF site.
