Status of the Information Systems Profession

Prior to September 11, 2001, members of the information systems (IS) profession experienced spectacular growth in recognition, professional status and financial reward. Since that date, however, and in the midst of a downturn of the United States and global economies, IS professionals have experienced a sharp downward spiral in professional status and financial reward. In this paper, the author surveys the status of the IS profession, exploring the areas most affected, and pointing towards new promising areas of growth.
