Van Eyck Professor Sandy Norton, Sponsor Race, Sexuality and Iconography: Deconstructing the Lives of Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge Using literary commentary and biographical accounts, this presentation explores the careers of the popular 1950s actresses Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge, as well as their lasting affect on American culture. Particularly, this oral presentation will examine the lives of these women through feminist perspectives, incorporating visual aides, answering such questions as: What are their influences in Hollywood today? Can their successes and failures be explained by feminist theory? What parallels and distinctions occurred between Monroe and Dandridge? Hafter, Sponsor Gender Benders: Women Enlisted in the Military During the American Civil War This paper explores the experiences of women who officially enlisted in the Americ an Civil War, against regulations. Because of rigid gender roles, those who joined the ranks as soldiers had to disguise themselves as men. These pages describe their incredible experiences, the impact that the society they lived in had on their experiences and the lack of recognition they seem to have received, both then and now.
