Use of a Microwave Oven to Shorten Reaction Times in the Synthesis of Five-Membered Rings

We are investigating the use of a reaction microwave oven to significantly shorten the required reaction time of the aza-Cope rearrangement—Mannich cyclization in an effort to synthesize a series of five-membered heterocycles. This reaction will ultimately be used in the synthesis of a natural product that has potential for treating type II diabetes mellitus. Results of the microwave reactions will be presented and compared to results obtained using conventional heating methods.
