Chinese City Design: Searching History in Order to Find a Balanced and Sustainable Future

The design of Chinese cities has included many intriguing elements throughout its long and disparate history. Ancient designs were conducive to linking man with nature and the transcendent components of the universe. Their modern forms, however, allow little harmony between ancient and contemporary principles. This research traces the elements of Chinese city design throughout its history. A theory is then proposed concerning the elements requisite for a balanced and culturally-sensitive design for the future of China’s urban systems.
