The Influence of the Media on Race Relations

The portrayal of minorities by the media has both positive and negative effects on race relations. This paper examines the advantages and disadvantages of current media portrayals. Advantages include exposure of new cultures and minority issues as well as a growth in minority media. Disadvantages include overuse of stereotypes and a resulting, unsubstantiated fear of minorities. By examining both sides of the issue, the effects of media may be more accurately understood.
