A Comparative Needs Assessment on the Infant Health Status in the Chicago Communities

Infant mortality in the African American population has been twice as high as other populations in the United States. Cook County, Ill. has the largest African American population and also the greatest number of infant deaths. A comparative needs assessment was performed to evaluate key indicators of infant health status for the 77 community areas of Chicago. Based on his data, a pilot survey was distributed to influential churches and resulted in a collaborative program entitled “It Takes a Village.”
