Magical Realism and its Transformation: From Art to Literature

Magical realism is a well known literary movement, especially among Third world writers, but its root in the European visual arts have all too frequently been overlooked. In 1925, Franz Roh created the term magical realism to define a new art movement formed after World War I in reaction to Expressionism and abstract paintings. This presentation explores how the term magical realism, though rooted in the visual arts, became associated with literature.
