Can Eight Songs Deliver One Bliss?

Robert Schumann’s musical setting of Frauenliebe und Leben, and Adelbert von Chamisso’s 1830 sermon turned poem expresses the extreme emotions of a woman in search of lifelong happiness with a man she worships from afar and then marries. The German religious mysticism all but compares this man to that of the Creator – drawing on parallels between the man and God. Someone today might find the blissful words of Frauenliebe und Leben, though beautiful, almost humorous, given the more assertive role of women today.
