Slavery in the Great Lakes and Midwest: 1700-1860

The image of Southern antebellum slavery is pervasive in the United States. However, chattel slavery, both black and native, was also present in other parts of the country from the Europeans first arrival onward. Within the Great Lakes region the presence and effects slavery had upon the development of society was considerable. This paper outlines locations and contributions of slaves during the colonial and early national periods of the Great Lakes and Midwest regions.
