Adaptation of the OligoDetect® System for Use as a Molecular Diagnostic Teaching Tool in Undergraduate Microbiology

This project examines the adaptation of a commercial kit for the detection of the pathogenic bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, into a teaching tool for allied health microbiology students. Detection of S. pneumoniae is accomplished through genetic detection of the pneumolysin gene. Utilization of this exercise will introduce students to the concepts and practice of DNA amplification and hybridization techniques, which are employed in molecular diagnostics.
