Recycle Ann Arbor, Drop Off Station Design of New Administrative Offices

The Drop Off Station accepts waste metals, plastics, textiles, tires, landscape and other hazardous waste for the Ann Arbor/Washtenaw county area. This new construction project will be an exemplar solution for sustainable design and energy use. This project has an opportunity to increase Recycle Ann Arbor's impact on our region and community by broadening clarity and quality of sustainable design information being delivered to clients and visitors. Interior design students developed space planning and concept designs, program requirements, interior furnishings, and models and concept drawings packages.

Sustainable and Energy Efficient Mid-Rise Housing for the City of Ann Arbor

Bandamere Ridge condominium units located at Sunset Street in Ann Arbor, Mich. have been designed as a sustainable design initiative, reflecting Ann Arbor's commitment to environmental responsibility. The site has a spectacular view of the Huron River. Sustainable design features include: 1) restoration of ecology to site, 2) correct solar orientation of building, 3) geothermal heating and cooling, 4) electric car port, 5) green roofs, 6) porous paving, 7) maximized day lighting and use of natural light, and 8) natural and renewable materials. Interior design students developed concept drawings, models of a two-level living unit, common areas and a fitness center using American's Disability Act (ADA) compliance standards.

Minimizing Construction Waste

Waste is a great problem in the world of construction. Many solutions such as lean construction's sustainable building practices have been developed, but significant waste reduction has not been recognized. Given the importance of this problem, this project aims to evaluate more strategic ways to minimize construction waste. A field examination will be done to determine what builders are, and are not, doing with regards to minimizing construction waste.
