Setting Up a Forward Only Account

EMU provides full service email accounts only for those who are currently faculty, staff, emeriti, or current and recent students. For all others who have EMU email accounts, including most alumni, and students who have not enrolled recently, EMU will provide a forward only email account. If you are reading this page, you have probably been notified as someone who has a forward only account.

If you have a forward only account, you will need set a personal forwarding address (e.g., a GMail or Yahoo email address) to continue receiving your @emich.edu email messages. Forward only account holders will not be able to log in to the EMU email system to receive mail; instead, you will need to login to your personal email account that you have designated for email forwarding. No email will be stored on EMU servers for forward only accounts.

Note: If you have been notified of a date on which your email account will be converting to a forward only account, you will need to move (POP) you inbox email to your personal forwarding email address before that conversion date. On the conversion date, all of your existing email messages on the EMU servers will be permanently and irretrievably deleted. These messages will not be automatically forwarded. Consult with your external email provider for any setup and configuration requirements. The provider may require some additional settings. See Email Settings (IMAP/POP) for these settings. If you do not set up a forward only account, after the conversion, any incoming email messages to that account will be returned to the sender.

Follow these directions to set up a forward only account:

  1. Log in to My.Emich and click the e-mail button.

  2. If you have a forward only account, the @emich.edu e-mail forwarding page is displayed.
  3. Type your My.Emich username in the Username field.
  4. Type your My.Emich password in the Password field.
  5. Click the Submit button.

  6. Type the destination address for your messages in the E-Mail Forwarding Address field.
  7. Click the Start Forwarding link.

  8. Verify the Stop Forwarding link is displayed. If it is, your account is now set to forward you @emich.edu email messages to the address displayed in the E-mail Forwarding Address field.
