Setting General Options

The General Options Section is the default page when you first log on a listserv. Fundamental list characteristics, including descriptive information about the list and basic behavior, are set up in the General List Options.

Since an Announcement-only list is used to send messages to a predetermined list of individuals, and the list membership may frequently change, newly subscribed and unsubscribed members do not need to receive a welcome or goodbye message from this listserv. It is recommended that you turn these features off.

Follow the instructions below to set up the basic behavior for an announcement-only listserv:

  1. Log on the list using the URL in the email sent to you by the Mailman system.
  2. The system will open at the General Options category.

  3. Scroll down to the Notifications section.
  4. Set "Send welcome message to newly subscribed members?" to No.
  5. Set "Send goodbye message to members when they are unsubscribed?" to No.

  6. Set "Send mail to poster when their posting is held for approval?" to No.

  7. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Submit Your Changes button.
