What is Campus Connections?

The goal of the Campus Connections program is

  • to support incoming freshmen by providing them with meaningful social interactions

  • to support students who choose to socialize without the use of alcohol

  • to link students with upper class mentors who will help them utilize relevant campus resources

  • to provide leadership opportunities

    History of Campus Connections

In 1999, The Michigan Department of Community Health Office of Drug Control Policy and the Michigan Campus Community Coalition for Prevention (Prevention Network) funded  the Campus Connections( C C ) grant at Eastern Michigan University. Many colleges and universities in Michigan participate in this exciting program that provides benefits to both incoming freshmen and returning upperclassmen.

( C C ) provides a variety of social events that have one thing in common; ways to have FUN in a healthy environment.

In the past ( C C ) has sponsored events like: Meijer Madness (a shopping extravaganza), EMU "ROCKS", Las Vegas night, pizza parties, movie nights, skating parties, tailgates at EMU football games, as well as, co-sponsored events with Housing and the Office of Campus Life.

     Information for Campus Connectors

Welcome to Eastern Michigan University!  Your first year assures a crash course in college life.  You will live on one of the most diverse campuses in the country, achieve your academic goals, learn how to balance a busy academic and social schedule, and become involved in campus organizations all at the same time.

The adjustment from home to college can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

The Campus Connections Program ( C C ) wants to help you make a smooth and healthy transition to EMU. ( C C ) matches freshmen with returning students, who will connect you to vital campus resources during your first few weeks on campus.  Our connectors will help support your transition to campus life and even share with you the successes and pitfalls of their first year experience.

( C C ) participants will be involved in many activities such as a campus-wide student involvement fair, a shopping extravaganza called Meijer madness, EMU "ROCKS", movie nights and many more!  These activities are in line with our goal to support students who have made the decision to socialize without alcohol .

 Letter to Parent

Dear New EMU Parent:

Eastern Michigan University is committed to offering programs that enhance student development while providing a safe and healthy environment.  We are excited to offer the Campus Connections ( C C ) Program to help support your child through the critical transition period from high school to college.  This program provides incoming students with the opportunity to meet and socialize with other first year students as well as returning students in a safe, yet fun social setting.

( C C ) helps link your child to resources vital for a healthy transition to campus during their first few weeks on campus.  We also provide social activities that allow students to interact with other EMU students in a low risk environment.  These activities are in line with our goal to reinforce your student’s decision not to use alcohol and, therefore, reduce the risks associated with its use.  The program events last throughout the month of September, however mentors are encouraged to continue contact with our participants.

At Eastern Michigan University we commend you as parents for your encouragement and commitment to your student.  In that regard, we would like to encourage you to have an open and honest discussion about the place of alcohol in your child’s life, especially once they arrive at EMU.  Our experience indicates that students are hearing what parents have to say even when they would like for you to believe otherwise.  Enclosed you will find a parent brochure providing information about campus attitudes on drinking.

Your son or daughter should receive a personal letter inviting him/her to participate in this program.  Although the decision to join the ( C C )Program must rest with the student, we encourage you to discuss this exciting opportunity with them.

If you are interested in learning more about ( C C ), please feel free to contact me at 734.487.1107 or by email at ellen.gold@emich.edu

As we look forward to the start of school, I hope your student will have an outstanding experience at Eastern Michigan University.

Sincerely,

Ellen Gold

Director
