How to Make an Appointment
How
to begin
If you have never been to Counseling Services, the way to
begin is through a new client appointment, available Monday
through Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. Alternate
times are also available. Because we would like to know something
about you and your concern before the visit, we ask you to
arrive 30 minutes early to provide
some general information. If there is a short wait before
you meet with a counselor, our waiting area is a private and
quiet place to study or read our supply of magazines.
How do I schedule a new client appointment?
Beginning on Monday of each week, you may schedule a new client
appointment for that week. You may schedule by phone or in
person. Please call to confirm your attendance
before 11 a.m. on the day of your appointment
(unless you scheduled for the same day). If we do not hear
from you, the appointment may be given to another student.
You may leave a voice mail message if you are unable to speak
to the secretary.
What if new client appointments are full?
If there are no openings for new clients when you call or
stop in, you have several options.
1) Ask to be placed on our waiting list. Office staff will
attempt to call you early Monday morning to schedule.
2) If you are not available for our call, you may call Counseling
Services early Monday morning to schedule for that week.
3) Call Counseling Services daily after 11 a.m. New client
appointments may have opened up for that afternoon.
What if my problem is urgent?
Let the secretary know so we can assist you in the best possible
way.
How long is each appointment?
During the first visit, you will meet with a psychologist
or a counselor 35-45 minutes. Subsequent visits are 45-50
minutes.
How
much does counseling cost?
As a registered EMU student, there is no additional cost.
Will I continue to see the person I first saw?
One visit is sometimes enough. If ongoing counseling is desired,
you may see the counselor you first saw or may be referred
to another counselor in the office, depending on your concern
or availability. The new counselor will be aware of your concern
before you are seen. You will remain with this person for
ongoing counseling.
What if I’ve been to Counseling Services before?
Depending on the time of year, you may schedule directly with
your former counselor or may be asked to schedule a meeting
during her/his new client appointment time. The secretary
can assist you.
