Insurance Information for
International Students

1. Am I required to have the EMU Insurance Policy?

International students are required to have insurance while studying at EMU. Currently, you are able to waive our policy if an acceptable/comparable insurance plan is found.

Click here for Waiver Process, Requirements and Application

2.
What do I need to do to be on the EMU Student Insurance?

As long as you are enrolled and a waiver was not completed/accepted you will automatically be billed for Student Insurance by semester.

3. What type of insurance do you accept?

Currently we can file insurance forms for the Student Health Insurance policy as offered by EMU only.

If you receive services at Snow Health Center you will be responsible for all charges when checking-out. We give an itemized receipt for services rendered at Snow at check out that may be sent in to your insurance company for reimbursement.

In the pharmacy, we participate with the following plans:

Blue Care Network
Blue Cross Michigan
Care Choices
Claims Pro
M-Care
Medicaid Michigan
PAID
PCS and Advance Rx
Express Scripts
SMG/Med. Net
Student Insurance
Total Health Care
NPA Management
Medimpact
Anthem Rx
St. Johns/Providence Hospital. Health Systems of Michigan
Drug Assistance Program

If you are unsure whether the pharmacy participates with your insurance plan, you should contact the pharmacy at 734.487.1125.

4. What type of payment do you accept at Snow Health Center?

Charges may be billed to the student’s account (for currently-enrolled students), paid for by cash, check, VISA, Discover or MasterCard. In these situations, an itemized medical receipt is given to the patient to file with their individual insurance carrier. If the student is covered by either of the two EMU student insurance policies, they will have a co-pay for services (including pharmacy prescriptions), which can be paid at that time or billed to their student account. The balance of the charges will be billed to Student Insurance by Snow and payment will be applied directly to the student’s account.

5. What are your hours of operation?

Fall and Winter:
Snow Health Center operates Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Spring and Summer:
Snow Health Center operates Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 5p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

We are closed during official University closings.

6. How can I get seen at Snow Health Center?

Call Snow Health Center at 734.487.1122 or stop in to make an appointment to see a doctor or nurse practitioner. If they cannot get an appointment right away, they may request to talk with a nurse to get advice about what to do until their appointment, so they may feel better.

7. What if I get sick at night or on the weekend?

Students should go to the emergency room at one of the provider hospitals if they are very, very sick (bad chest pain, difficulty breathing, broken bone, bad cut needing stitches.)

If you go to the emergency room for a mild illness, the insurance company will not pay a majority of the charges – leaving you to pay much or all. The insurance company will generally pay more of the charges at local urgent care clinics for mild illnesses than at the emergency room (e.g. Urgent Care at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES.)

8. What benefits are included on the EMU student health insurance plan?

A brochure which describes the plan in detail is available at Snow Health Center. For further information, contact our Insurance Specialist Monday – Friday at 734.487.3048 or stop by Snow Health Center. Walk-in information hours are 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2 -4 p.m.
