FAQ's

1. Can my student be seen at Snow? - I have HMO coverage.

Yes. All currently enrolled EMU students can obtain health care at Snow Health Center. However, it is recommended that parents contact their primary care provider and let them know that their (son/daughter) will be going away to school. Ask for permission for the child to be seen at Snow. You may need a written approval of this by the primary care doctor. Typically, if it is an emergency, we can see the student and services will be covered, but this is not a given. We will treat any student. We simply cannot guarantee that the charges for services rendered at Snow will be covered by your insurance plan.

Each insurance company is different about how and whom they reimburse the charges that result from one of their clients seeking health care – HMO’s are particular about this. Parents should discuss with their customer service representative at their HMO about what to do regarding the charges for health care that their son/daughter should incur when out of the HMO service area (away at college). It is best to get permission to obtain medical services at Snow from your HMO before your student leaves home. Be sure your son/daughter has a copy of their insurance card with them.

NOTE: Students under the age of 18 must have a ‘Medical Treatment of Minor Consent Form’ on file at Snow Health Center, in order for them to be treated. This form will be mailed to incoming students along with other Health Services information during the summer prior to attendance at EMU.

2. What type of insurance do you accept?

We file insurance forms for the Student Health Insurance as offered by EMU, and accept their reimbursement as payment in full for our clinic services. We give an itemized receipt for services rendered at Snow at check out that may be sent in to your insurance company for reimbursement.

3. What type of payment do you accept at Snow Health Center?

Charges may be billed to the student’s account (for currently-enrolled students), paid for by cash, check, VISA, Discover or MasterCard. In these situations, an itemized medical receipt is given to the patient to file with their individual insurance carrier. If the student is covered by either of the two EMU student insurance policies, they will have a co-pay for services (including pharmacy prescriptions), which can be paid at that time or billed to their student account. The balance of the charges will be billed to Student Insurance by Snow and payment will be applied directly to the student’s account.

4. What are your hours of operation?

Fall and Winter:
Snow Health Center operates Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Spring and Summer:
Snow Health Center operates Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 5p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

We are closed during official University closings.

5. How can my student get seen at Snow Health Center?

Call Snow Health Center at 734.487.1122 or stop in to make an appointment to see a doctor or nurse practitioner. If they cannot get an appointment right away, they may request to talk with a nurse to get advice about what to do until their appointment, so they may feel better.

6. What if my student gets sick at night or on the weekend?

Students should go to the emergency room at one of the provider hospitals if they are very, very sick (bad chest pain, difficulty breathing, broken bone, bad cut needing stitches.) If they go to the emergency room for a mild illness, the insurance company will not pay very much of the charges – leaving you to pay much or all. The insurance company will generally pay more of the charges at local urgent care clinics for mild illnesses than at the emergency room (e.g. Urgent Care at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital is ONLY FOR EMERGENCIES.)

7. What benefits are included on the EMU student health insurance plan?

A brochure which describes the plan in detail is available at Snow Health Center. For further information, contact our Insurance Specialist Monday – Friday at 734.487.3048 or stop by Snow Health Center. Walk-in information hours are 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 2 -4 p.m.
