EMU FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES RECORD FUNDRAISING: The Eastern Michigan University Foundation has announced record fundraising of $7.9 million for fiscal year 2007-2008. Preliminary figures, as of June 30, include cash gifts of more than $7.1 million, best-ever for the University; and gifts-in-kind of nearly $800,000. This exceeds the 2006-2007 fundraising total of $4.2 million by 88 percent.

"We at the EMU Foundation are thrilled to announce this record-breaking fundraising, a real tribute tot the commitment of and generosity of our donors," said Ronald G. Miller, associate vice president for development. "The designated funds will benefit so many excellent programs and students at EMU."

TODAY

ELEARNING TRAINING - DEVELOPING ONLINE COURSES AND CONTENT: Learn more about the exciting possibilities of eLearning in a relaxed, informative and collaborative setting at training offered once a week for three consecutive weeks. The training is designed for instructors who have never used an online course management system and are interested in
developing a Web-enhancement, hybrid course or 100 percent online course. No specialized technical skills or abilities are needed to take part in the workshop or for instructors to develop an online offering. Participants who successfully complete the series are awarded a certificate of completion and typically implement their newly-developed course shell in the upcoming academic term. Workshops are scheduled Wednesdays, today through July 23.

RETURN TO LEARN: Adults interested in earning a college degree, an advanced degree or certification can explore the opportunities at EMU during the Return to Learn open house in Livonia, today, 3-7 p.m., at EMU-Livonia, 38777 W. Six Mile Rd, west of I-275. Information will be provided about admission, academics, registration, financial aid, career services, veteran services and more. MANAGE YOUR BUDGET USING FINANCE SELF SERVICE: Learn how to manage your budget using my.emich and eprint reports. Two different classes are offered, "Department Budget 1: Eprint Reports" and "Department Budget 2: Finance Self Service." Several sessions are offered in July. Online registration is required. *SUMMER IN THE CITY: Hillel of Metro Detroit is spending a summer day in the city to improve and expand community service in metro Detroit, Friday, July 11. EMU EVERYWHERE: Eastern Michigan University has launched a summer student enrollment marketing push. New radio ads will begin airing on area stations WDTW-1310 AM, WXYT-97.1 FM, WDRQ-93.1 FM, WDVD-96.3 FM and WWWW-102.9 FM; and a new billboard, titled “1 Smart Move,” will be placed along 11 major freeways and roads in Wayne, Washtenaw, Oakland, Livingston and Macomb counties. ROBERT BAILEY ART SHOW: Ford Gallery will showcase the work of artist Robert Bailey's career during a retrospective, "That's Just Bob — The Life's Work of Robert Bailey," July 14-25, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show will display a visual timeline, and is complemented with articles and photos. *FOOTBALL SEASON TICKETS NOW ON SALE: Season tickets for Eastern Michigan University's football team are now on sale. Home games this year include: Indiana State, Aug 28; the University of Toledo, Sept. 13; Northern Illinois, Sept. 27 (Homecoming); Akron, Oct. 18 (Band Day); and Central Michigan University, Nov. 28. REMINDERS

*EMU STAFF/FACULTY ELIGIBLE FOR TUITION WAIVER: Eastern Michigan University staff and faculty are eligible to use the University tuition waiver benefit for courses at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level courses. The benefit waives up to six (6) credit hours for a full-time employee and up to three (3) credit hours for a part-time employee each term. The Internal Revenue Code (IRC) requires reporting and withholding of income, state and FICA taxes for the value of tuition waiver whenever an amount exceeds $5,250 annually per employee. The value of tuition waivers exceeding $5,250 in a year (fall, winter, spring and summer) will be considered taxable income. Please keep track of the value of the waivers used in the event this amount is exceeded. Tuition waiver applications for employees and spouse/dependents are available on on the Human Resources Web site under HR forms, under benefits, at www.emich.edu/hr/hrforms Be sure to complete a waiver form each term.  Fro questions, call the Benefits Office, 487-3195.

NEW CHILD BOOSTER SEAT LAW: As of July 1, 2008, a new Michigan law mandates that all children be in a booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4’9” tall. Children must be in a seat until they reach the age requirement or the height requirement, whichever comes first. This is a primary enforcement law so a police officer can stop a vehicle if the officer sees an improperly restrained child and issue a citation. This could end up costing parents $65 to $165 in fines and fees for each unrestrained child in the vehicle For more information about child passenger safety seats and the new law, please visit http://www.michigansafekids.org/

MAIL SERVICE SCHEDULE CHANGE: Mail services started a trial mail delivery/pick-up schedule for central campus July 7. Departments should expect pick-ups to occur earlier in the day. An established delivery schedule should be realized within a week or two. Patience is appreciated, while a more efficient and greener process is the goal. 2008 MILEAGE RATE INCREASE EFFECTIVE: Under Issue Number IR-2008-82 from the Internal Revenue Service, effective since July 1, 2008, through December 31, 2008, the standard mileage rate has increased from 50.5 cents per mile to 58.5 cents for all business miles. The University will reimburse up to the 58.5 cents per mile for business miles during these months. For questions, please contact the Accounts Payable Department, 487-0022.

TROOP SUPPORT: EMU'S Counseling Clinic in the College of Education is now offering free, short-term counseling services to veterans and civilian support staff who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Services include counseling to help veterans or support staff return to civilian life, job problems, career counseling and assessments, and coping with depression and anxiety. Counseling is provided by advanced graduate students in a counseling program in the College of Education Clinic, Porter Building. All counseling is supervised by experienced faculty who are licensed professional counselors and psychologists. For more information, contact Dr. Perry Francis, 487-4410.

OFFICE OF NUTRITION SERVICES OPEN THIS SUMMER: The Office of Nutrition Services, located in 108 Roosevelt Hall, will be open to serve faculty, staff and students during the summer semester. The office will be open every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Services include individual nutrition counseling, body composition and nutrient analysis. Student fees are $5 and faculty fees are $10. WARREN SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE: The College of Arts and Sciences reminds all students and faculty that the Francis R. Warren Scholarship is still available. Applicants must have: an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 overall and 3.4 in the major; a FAFSA for 2008-2009; a minimum 12 credits in Winter 2008; and 60 hours completed.
