In the early days of tv broadcasting, engineers worried about keeping audio and video signals synchronized. They accidently discovered that they had around a hundred milliseconds of slop: as long as signals arrived within this window, viewers' brains would automatically resynchronize signals; outside that tenth-of-a-second window, it would look like a badly dubbed movie.
