Professor Raymond Lucas, who worked for more than 30 years at Eastern Michigan University, died unexpectedly on August 13. He was 61.

Lucas, director of video services at Eastern, began working at Eastern as a temporary lecturer in 1979, in what was known then as the Speech and Dramatic Arts Department.

He was hired into a tenure-track position in Media Services in the Learning Resources and Technologies department on 1985 at the assistant professor rank. He was granted tenure in 1989. Professor Lucas legally changed his name from Lukasavitz to Lucas in 1995.

While at Eastern, Lucas served as President of the EMU branch of the American Association of University Professors. He became well known for his level of service and wise advice to his colleagues and friends.

The family plans a private memorial service. The AAUP and the University Library are planning to co-sponsor a campus service later this fall, on a date to be determined. Details will be announced.
