'TRUEMU Education First Essay Contest' winners announced

Students from Chesterfield Township, Ypsilanti win scholarship awards of $7,500 to attend Eastern

YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University, in partnership with AnnArbor.com, has announced the winners of the "TRUEMU Education First Essay Contest."

Angela Furton, of Chesterfield Township, is the recipient of the $7,500 award for the 2012 class. She is a senior at International Academy of Macomb, Clinton Township.

"My Special Friend" was the title of her essay.

"It is an incredible opportunity that will benefit my education," Furton said. "EMU is a pretty incredible school."

Destiny Washington, of Ypsilanti, is the recipient of the $7,500 award for the 2013 class. She is a junior at Willow Run High School.

"My Path to Success" was the title of her essay.

"Knowing I have won the contest gives me a greater hope I will achieve my dream," Washington said. "I am thankful for the opportunity and I look forward to becoming an EMU Eagle in the fall of 2013."

EMU hosted the essay contest on Jan. 14 in its Student Center. More than 70 area students participated, each receiving an "I AM TRUEMU" T-shirt, free parking, free lunch and complimentary admission to an EMU women's basketball game after the essay competition.
