Eastern Michigan University will host the state's largest teacher job fair, Tuesday, April 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the EMU Convocation Center, 799 N. Hewitt in Ypsilanti.

The event is open to all teacher candidates who have completed their student teaching by June 2012 and those who have a teaching certificate.  Although online registration is closed, walk-ins are welcome. The cost is $15.

"This is our 25th anniversary of hosting this event," said Barbara Jones, senior corporate relations manager, EMU university and career development center. "We currently have 95 schools registered, representing more than 230 recruiters from a variety of states and overseas schools."

More than forty Michigan public schools, academies and related education employers are registered for the event, Jones said. Other schools are returning after not attending for several years and more employers are signing up on a daily basis.

"With seasoned teachers retiring, population changes and the addition of new private schools and academies, there will be positions," Jones said.

Jones advises that candidates seeking a teaching position should be prepared to meet prospective employers. She offers the following tips for a successful interview:

  • Networking is still one of the most productive methods for securing a position. Passive approaches, like only applying online, leave many candidates unemployed.
  • Job fairs provide the chance to meet face-to-face with recruiters to market your experience, education and skills.
  • While most employers require an online application, remember that they will review the online applications of candidates who impress them at the fair.
  • Applicants must present the "complete package" while at the fair. This includes dressing professionally; having academic training in the required subject area; demonstrating persuasive communications skills and providing documentation such as a resume and references.
  • Be prepared to ask questions. That shows your interest and that you've researched the school system.
