YPSILANTI: Jamil Baghdachi, an internationally-known polymers and coatings expert at Eastern Michigan University, has been honored with the American Coatings Association's 2012 Industry Excellence Award.
Baghdachi, a professor of polymers and coatings at Eastern Michigan's Coatings Research Institute, was honored during the association's 125th anniversary dinner in Indianapolis May 7.
Baghdachi has more than 25 years of experience in the areas of polymers, coatings, adhesives, paints and composites, and holds 44 patents. He also has contributed to more than 100 publications.
His expertise and research interests include coatings research for the automotive, industrial; architectural and aerospace industries; waterborne and powder coatings; smart coatings; nanotechnology and adhesion; corrosion; plastics; durability and performance assessment.
Baghdachi has worked for and consulted with national and international firms and organizations, as well as the U.S. Army, Air Force and Coast Guard bases on polymeric materials, coatings, paints, corrosion control, applications, processes and product durability.
As a member of the association's science and technology committee, he has chaired the education subcommittee since 2009, advising and organizing educational events. He chaired the professional development committee of the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology from 1997 to 2009 until its merger with ACA.
Baghdachi's industry leadership and service positions include organizer and general chair of the Smart Coatings Conference. He also has worked in industry as president of Innovative Technical Systems Corp. since 1990, and formerly with BASF Corp. and ARCO Chemical Co.
Eastern Michigan's Coatings Research Institute was founded in 1985. The Institute is dedicated to providing solutions to some of the tough problems facing the coatings industry.
Faculty expertise includes polymer synthesis, modification and testing; industrial coatings; automotive OEM and refinish, specialty and smart coatings (anti-microbial, self-healing, and marine antifouling coatings); green chemistry, and coating design, formulation and characterizations (high solids, water-borne coatings, powder coatings, radiation curable coatings.)
