The Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents approved a five-year lease extension with Cambridge Center LLP for EMU's Livonia campus during its regular meeting Oct. 30. The existing agreement, which covers a 22,453 sq. ft. area, expires in June 2013.
The EMU Livonia satellite campus, located in western Wayne County, currently serves more than 900 students registered for day, evening and weekend classes. The evening and the weekend schedules are popular among working professionals.
"New and transfer students are attracted to EMU Livonia and our other sites because of the flexible formats and convenience of the locations," said Julie Knutson, director of extended programs at Eastern. "They also like the one-on-one with instructors and one-stop student services."
Classes offered at the Livonia site include business administration, construction management, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership k-12 administration, human resources management and organizational development, nursing, public administration and technology management.
Extended Programs at EMU will also focus on increasing community college articulation agreements and completion programming at off-campus locations, Knutson said. These locations include Brighton, Detroit, Livonia, Fish Lake in Lapeer, Monroe, Jackson and Traverse City.
Articulation agreements are a joint partnership between an academic program at EMU and an academic program at a community college. An agreement allows students to complete an associate degree program and transfer to a related bachelor's degree program with a minimum loss of credit and duplication of coursework.
The new lease will reduce overall costs by 16.5 percent, resulting in an estimated cost savings of $532,500 over the life of the 5½ year agreement. As part of the agreement, the lease rate for the remaining eight months of the current agreement also will be reduced
The Livonia campus, which opened in 1999, is located at 38777 W. Six Mile Rd., just west of I-275.
