Eastern Michigan University will host TRUEMU Day at Eastern Market on Saturday, April 20 to celebrate the rich history of both institutions – Eastern Michigan University and Eastern Market. Both were founded more than 160 years ago – Eastern Market in 1841 (then as Detroit Farmer’s Market) and Eastern Michigan University (then as Michigan State Normal School) in 1849.
“Students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and supporters are invited to join us to celebrate one of the best destinations in Southeast Michigan,” said Walter Kraft, vice president for communications at Eastern Michigan University. “We’ll have special gifts and discounts for our extended Eastern Michigan University family to help them enjoy this great treasure in the heart of a Detroit. Eastern Market is a one-of-a-kind place were thousands of people come together every week to celebrate great food, fresh produce and made-in Michigan arts and crafts in a festival-like atmosphere, and Eastern Michigan is proud to support this wonderful tradition.”
The University will hold a brief welcome ceremony at 9 a.m. in Shed 5 of the market, with remarks from Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin, Dan Carmody, president of Eastern Market Corporation, and State Senator Coleman Young II, whose district represents the Eastern Market area.
