YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin has announced additional details regarding the search process for the University's next director of athletics. A nationwide search will begin immediately with the objective of completing the process and having a new athletic director in place early this summer. The job description and requirements for director of athletics are posted on the EMU jobs website at https://www.emujobs.com/. All candidates should submit applications online.
President Martin also announced the selection of Walter Kraft, vice president for communications at EMU, to lead the search committee for the University's next director of athletics.
Kraft, EMU's vice president of communications since August 2009, served as chair of the committee that recently completed Eastern's successful NCAA certification process. EMU was one of the last two universities to undergo certification before the NCAA declared a moratorium on the highly rigorous process. Members of the search committee will be announced soon, Kraft said.
The next EMU athletic director will lead a department known for success on and off the field, along with community service. Eastern has 21 varsity sports, most in the Mid-American Conference, with 526 student athletes. This past fall semester resulted in the highest overall cumulative GPA ever for the athletic department at 3.201. The new athletic director will replace Derrick Gragg, who left Eastern after seven years to become AD at the University of Tulsa. Melody Reifel Werner, associate athletic director and senior women's administrator in the EMU Athletic Department, is serving as interim athletic director.
